Auðkenni ehf. - FAQ

Using the Audkenni-app

The Auðkenni app is an easy, convenient and secure way to identify yourself online and perform electronic signatures. The app, which is free of charge, can be used anywhere in the world, regardless of telephone company, with both Icelandic and foreign mobile phone numbers.

You can download the Auðkenni app in App Store or Google Play and create an account. You can create an account if you already have an electronic ID on you mobile phone (SIM) or go to a service point where you need to identify yourself with a driving license, passport or an Icelandic identity cart.

After creating an account,  you can use the Auðkenni app with the service providers that support it.

The app needs an internet connection to communicate with the e-service, so either mobile internet connection or WiFi must be switched on and available.

The data amount needed for one app transaction is really small, on average about 5kb.
The app has no age restrictions.
To register an account, a minor needs an approval from a legal guardian.

You probably do not have an account. To get the app, download the Audkenni-app from the App Store or Google Playstore and complete the registration process via electronic certificate or by going to a registration station. Registration stations are in all bank branches.

If you have downloaded the app and successfully completed the registration, make sure you entered your authentication data (social security number, kennitala) correctly on the e-service login form.

Not necessarily. Just allow the app to receive push notifications and all notifications will appear on your smart device screen automatically. If there is a delay in receiving notifications, open the app manually: you can force active transaction checking and complete authentications there.

Yes, your location does not matter as long as you have a working internet connection. You can use the Audkenni-app anywhere in the world.

First, make sure that your device has access to the internet – mobile internet connection or WiFi switched on.

In case the authentication notification hasn’t reached your device, open the app. Then check if there are any ongoing authentications in progress. The app will prompt you to enter a PIN code if neccessary.

The app will inform you If your PINs are locked.

If you open the app and tap anywhere on the screen a message will appear informing you "No transaction found". It is because when you open the app it performs a request to see whether you are in the middle of authentication or signing process. It is checking to see if there is a service waiting for you to confirm your identity.

If there is a request waiting - for example if you are logging in to island.is - the app will display the confirmation code and ask you to enter PIN1.

If you open the app while there is no active request, you will see the message "No transaction found". It is not a warning and nothing is wrong. The app is simply letting you know that no service is waiting authentication at the moment.

The account is valid for 5 years. If you wish to continue to use your app account you have to delete your old account and create a new one. This is done by opening the app, go to menu, select "Delete account" and then create a new one.

Customer service points can be found at all banks and phone companies along with Auðkennis office at Borgartún 31. At the service point you can get help at applying and deleting your accounts

If you reset your Android or iOS device to factory settings, then all your account related information will have been erased. In order to use Auðkennisapp again you have to register another account.

No. Just like passports, driving licenses, and ID cards, the Auðkennisapp account is only intended for the person it was authorized to.

The app is free to download and use. It doesn't cost anything.

The app can be used on more devices than a phone, such as a tablet. The app is also not connected to a telephone number, so individuals with a foreign telephone number can use the app for authentication and signing, the device only needs to be connected to the internet.
